American WWI Air Force Group Summaries

Please note that these are not exact and will be filled in as we run across the information. Also all dates unless otherwise specified are for 1918 upto November 11th, 1918, which was the end of the war. Casualty figures are from Gorrell's, roll 12, page 483 and cover August 20th to November 11th, 1918. During this period, the Germans shot down 199 American airplanes and 22 American balloons. The locations below are not complete. Dates shown are arrival dates. Dates preceded by an "*" indicate that the group was at the named location during that time, but that I have not yet found the arrival date.

1st Pursuit Group

1. Squadrons: 27th, 94th, 95th and 147th Aero Squadrons, later joined by 185th and 218th Aero Squadrons
2. Locations: Epiez (Apr. 1), Toul (Apr. 7), Touquin (June 26), Saints (July 9), Rambercourt (September 1)
3. Aircraft: Nieuport 28, transitioned to Spad XIII in July and August; 185th Aero Squadron operated Salmson
4. KIA: 26
5. Wounded: 11

8. Notes: Group started in April, 1918. 27th and 147th attached in June, 185th in October. 94th's leader was Rickenbacker with 26 kills. Frank Luke (18 kills) and Joe Werner (6 kills) served with the 27th.

3. Aircraft: Spad VII for 28th; rest with Spad XIII. By October 31*, 28th was operating Spad XIIIs as well.

8. Notes: 103rd Aero Squadron was formerlly N.124 and then Spa 124, better known as the Escadrille Lafayette when it was part of the Armee de l'Air Francais (French Air Force).

1st Day Bombardment Group

2. Locations: Chaumont (?), Amanty (spelling?) (* Sept. 4)
3. Aircraft: 96th operated the Breguet B. The rest were operating DH4-Bs.

8. Notes: Group name changed to Night Recon, Day Bombing Group by September 4*.

Army Observation Group

1. Squadrons: 9th, 24th, 91st Aero Squadrons

3. Aircraft: 9th operated Breguet OB; other two operated Salmsons. 91st had two Spad XIIIs by Oct. 31. 24th had 1 Liberty and 91st had 2 Liberty by Oct. 31 in addition to Salmsons.
