5th Pursuit Group

The 5th Pursuit Group never went into action. It was formed on November 15th, 1918, four days after the Armistice. The squadrons included in the 5th Pursuit Group were the 41st Aero Squadron 138th Aero Squadron and the 638th Aero Squadron. Captain Edward Buford commanded the 41st, Captain Dudley Hill commanded the 138th and was also group commander, and Lt. Fred B. Ashworth the 638th. Fred had also commanded the 41st Aero Squadron.

The group moved to Coblenz, Germany as part of the American Occupation Army and was stationed there until September, 1919. Henry Clay - with eight victories to his credit while flying with the 148th Aero Squadron - took over command of the 41st Aero Squadron but was killed by the virulent Spanish Flu that was ravaging the militaries of all sides.
